Mountain biking
Hiraethog is a great place for mountain biking and there are routes to suit all ages and abilities –whether you’re after family biking, moderate routes or a technical downhill race.
The open heather moors, twisting forestry tracks and gentle shorelines of the Alwen and Brenig Reservoirs provide a varied and rugged mountain biking experience. This together with terrific wildlife and stunning views of Snowdonia and the Clwydian Range make it a place not to be missed.
Check out the fantastic Ride Hiraethog website for routes and trail information in this area.
The best routes for families such as the fully way-marked Alwen Trail are highlighted in the family cycling section.
Technical downhill racers should check out Foel Gasnach (see link below) Here are some of the routes:
- Lake and a bit – A moderately hard route that links together Llyn Brenig and the forests.
- The two lake tour – A challenging route covering almost 50km.
- Tough at the top – A hard route – with breathtaking descents!
- Foel Gasnach – The venue for mountain bike racing in North Wales.
Remember - the weather can change suddenly here as in any mountainous area and mobile phones are unlikely to work – so be sure to carry warm clothing, waterproofs, food and drink.
Have a great day in the saddle !
