Llyn Brenig - a great destination for walking, biking, fishing and picnics !
Llyn (Lake) Brenig - with its heather and spruce lined shores - is a fantastic place to visit whether you’re into fly-fishing, walking & mountain biking, bird watching, visiting archaeology sites - or just fancy a picnic!
This beautiful lake – actually a reservoir - is one of the largest areas of inland water in Wales with a perimeter of 9.5 miles / 15km. Built between 1973 and 1976, the reservoir helps to regulate the water supply to the River Dee.
Brenig Visitor Centre :
The Brenig Visitor Centre and main car park is open from mid March to the end of October. It has a cafe, shop and an exhibition about the building of the reservoir and local wildlife to be found here. Outside there is a popular children’s play area.
Walking and Mountain biking
The Visitor Centre is a good starting point for the following routes:
Brenig Trail – relatively flat 9.5/15km way-marked route around the reservoir.
The Two Lakes Trail - 14 mile / 22.5 km which forms a large loop around both the Alwen and Brenig reservoirs.
Up to the Lake –moderately challenging route of 42km exploring Clocaenog Forest and Llyn Brenig.
The Lake and a bit – more challenging route with great views of Snowdonia.
For details of these two trails follow this link to the Ride Hiraethog site.
Fishing at Llyn Brenig
Stocked with 36,000 Rainbow Trout, Llyn Brenig is one of the best fishing lakes in the UK - staging the Home Fly-fishing Internationals and the World Fly Fishing Championships. The current record is for a 17lb 5oz trout caught in 2006. For fisherman’s reports and lots of other useful information, visit the Llyn Brenig section of VisitWales fishing website.
Archaeological Trail
During the building of the reservoir parties of volunteers investigated over 50 sites and uncovered important evidence of Mesolithic (Early Stone Age) and Bronze Age occupation. Today you can visit the Barrow and Ring Cairn - burial and ceremonial monuments - and other historic sites by following the Archaeological Trail. Start from the car park to the north west side of the reservoir.
Birdlife
Llyn Brenig is a great place for bird spotting - there are a number of bird hides around the lake to watch the activity on the water –perhaps a wintering Goldeneye or a Goosander – or look out for Crossbills in the conifers.
