The Alwen Trail
This new walking and family biking trail around the Alwen Reservoir is perfect for families and less technical mountain bikers.
The 7 mile/11.5 km way-marked route is well away from metalled roads – so you and the kids can concentrate on the biking!
The circular trail follows forest tracks & stone paths a safe distance from the water’s edge, climbing up onto the moorland of Mynnyd Hiraethog at its western end – where there are fantastic views towards Snowdonia and across the reservoir.
Along the route are six illustrated panels which explore the wildlife, culture and folk tales of this landscape – look out for the tale of the Fairy Freckled Cow!
The trail has uneven surfaces, some steep ascents / descents, narrow and exposed sections. You will also have to lift your bikes over 3 kissing gates and a step-over stile. The weather can change suddenly here as in any mountain area and mobile phones are unlikely to work – so be sure to carry warm clothing, waterproofs, food and drink.
Here’s some of the things people have said about the Trail -
“My wife and I rode it yesterday in fine but cloudy weather – very impressed!” Mr and Mrs James, 73 and 59 mountain bikers.
“At last a path suitable for children and dogs. Looking forward to taking them all the way around without worrying about crossing roads!” Cecilia Paton.
“Rode it a couple of weeks ago, excellent location, quite remote in places and a top single track” P Smith, mountain biker.
