Walking the Alwen Trail

WildlifeThis scenic new trail around the Alwen Reservoir follows the shoreline and takes you through forest plantations and up onto Mynydd Hiraethog with stunning landscape views from high on the moorland. It’s easy to find your way – the seven mile / 11.5 km route is well way-marked with blue posts.

Michael Skuse, Hon Treasurer - Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales described the trail as a place to find “silence, space and lots of sky" - what more could you want from a countryside walk?

Along the route are six interpretation panels that tell you about local history, culture and folklore. Look out for remains of a poet’s cottage and learn the tale of the 'Freckled Fairy Cow', a magical pink freckled fairy cow with an endless supply of milk! There is interesting wildlife too – you may hear the bubbling cry of a curlew on the moor or perhaps glimpse a rare Black Grouse, Large Heath butterfly or even a Red Squirrel.

If you decide to walk the Alwen Trail or any of the other walks in Hiraethog prepare yourself as you would for any upland area. The weather can change suddenly and mobile phones are unlikely to work – so be sure to carry warm clothing, waterproofs, food and drink. For those with mobility problems note that the walk has uneven surfaces, some uphill climbs, and one step-over stile.

Have fun !
