Walking in Hiraethog
Hiraethog is a walker’s paradise – come and explore this ancient landscape of wild heather moor, lakes, woodland with panoramic views of Snowdonia and the Vale of Clwyd.
There are footpaths and way-marked trails for all abilities - quiet walks through Clocaenog Forest - challenging hikes up onto the heather of Mynydd Hiraethog - peaceful waterside trails along the shores of Llyn Brenig and the Alwen Reservoir, and historic routes through Mesolithic and Bronze Age sites.
Much of the moorland is Open Access Land and Clocaenog Forest can be explored on foot, mountain bike or horseback. Make sure that you have the right maps and equipment to find your way around.
The following walks are way-marked:
The Alwen Trail – a fully way-marked 7 mile walking / mountain biking trail around the reservoir - along the shoreline, through the forest and up onto the moorland.
A walk through time – two way-marked routes from the north shore of Llyn Brenig exploring prehistoric remains unearthed during the excavations of the 1970’s. The longer route should be tackled by more experienced walkers.
Llyn Brenig – a nine and a half mile route around the Brenig Reservoir that takes you through the nature reserve to the north of the lake - or you can just visit the nature reserve.
The Hiraethog Trail – a long route starting at the village of Pentrefoelas, crossing over the moorland of Mynydd Hiraethog and ending at Llanrhaeadr (near Denbigh) with a number of circular walks around the villages.
In addition to these routes Dave Berry’s book “Walks in the Hidden Heart of North Wales” details 21 circular walks in the area, and is available from local outlets or can be ordered (ISBN 978 1 90230253 9, published by Kittiwake, 2007), cost £4.95. The Clwydian Way also runs through the Mynydd Hiraethog – as it follows the 122 mile circular route from Prestatyn - to find out more visit the North Wales Ramblers site. Other routes that cut through Hiraethog include the Cistercian Way that links together many of the Cistercian Abbeys across Wales - visit their site to find out more.
